What Is SMILE Pro Eye Surgery?
SMILE stands for Small Incision Lenticule Extraction. In plain terms, it is a flapless way of correcting your vision with a laser: a precisely shaped disc of tissue, thinner than a contact lens, is formed inside your cornea and lifted out through a tiny opening. The cornea is left with a new curvature that focuses light correctly, so suitable patients can live without glasses or contact lenses. Your procedure is performed by our consultant refractive surgeon, who reviews every measurement with you before anything is planned.
Traditional LASIK begins by creating a hinged corneal flap that must be lifted and replaced. SMILE Pro does not: a single femtosecond laser works through a keyhole incision of roughly two millimetres, so the front surface of the cornea stays largely intact. At IEH the procedure runs on the ZEISS VISUMAX 800, the current generation of the platform that introduced SMILE to the world.
